It all started in a little café off 7200 south. Our Director of Corporate Training Diana Guetschow met with Nicole Goeckeritz, VP of training at Cyprus Credit Union (CCU), to discuss how Salt Lake Community College could meet one of CCU’s pressing needs through its Frontline Leader Workshop program. This was the first step in the creation of the Cyprus Climbers.

After several meetings of refining and fine-tuning, the Frontline Leader Workshop series was ready to welcome its first cohort of climbers. In addition to attending 11 monthly workshops, the Cyprus Climbers read books related to training topics and wrote summary reports, introspective responses and action plans addressing how they will use the new knowledge.
“The greatest aspect and most humbling part of being a trainer is that I’ve seen the climbers of the Frontline Leader Workshops gain a solid grounding preparing for the future, learning more about themselves and their abilities, and grow into strong leaders who want to inspire their teams, be more effective decision makers, better communicators, effectively connect to their teams, and reach goals toward success.” said Karen Dell of SLCC Corporate Training.

Dave Sant, Chief Marketing Officer of CCU, said at the recent graduation ceremony, “[We need to think] How can I be better today than I was the day before? That is how we realize our full potential. This program was really crucial in helping us be our better selves.”
The 2019 kickoff was a strong one. Each climber was eager to learn about leadership styles, inspiring teams, managing conflict, coaching, innovative ways of developing and managing people, achieving outstanding results and engaging their employees to deliver better results.
The 2020 climbers’ kickoff started with strong and positive sessions, and then, like the rest of the world, came to an abrupt stop as the pandemic settled in. Nonetheless, CCU was eager for the climbers to keep up their momentum. After valuable feedback and review, the program adapted through social distancing, face coverings and total online delivery before returning to face-to-face training, once again tailored to the needs of the climbers and ending in April 2022.
It was amazing to see how CCU committed to continuing with the trainings and nurturing their employees’ development. There were a few missed months, sure, but once the opening of business and trainings resumed, the atmosphere and engagement were as if no time had passed.
On June 10, 2022, the two cohorts came together at the Westpointe Workforce Training and Education Center to celebrate their accomplishments. From promotions to meeting and exceeding goals, the room was abuzz with excitement. After a short presentation each graduate was recognized with a plaque as a Frontline Leader. We look forward to our continued partnership with CCU and developing climbers!
The Frontline Leader Workshops are offered monthly to the public at two convenient locations with each lesson building upon the last.
