Scott Smith |
Meet Scott, who was introduced to the idea of taking a class with Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) through the Department of Workforce Services (DWS). Scott had never been too keen on the idea of sitting in an office or a classroom. Given Scott’s preference for working with his hands, his DWS counselor recommended the Utah Works program. This program offers an opportunity to explore in-demand skills for Utah’s workforce needs, at no cost to the student.
Scott started with the 3-day Intro to Composites program, where he learned the basics of composites such as fabrication skills and techniques, carbon fiber reinforced epoxy systems, and more. Much to his surprise, he enjoyed the class and completed it successfully. This inspired him to try the Rail Technician course also offered under the Utah Works program. During his time in this course, he learned assembly techniques that ultimately led him to register for the Welding program at the new Salt Lake Tech College.

With guidance and support from his DWS counselor, his instructors, and the advisors at SLCC, Scott is looking forward to using his new skills to start his own mobile welding business. Thanks to the opportunity to take these bite-sized college courses at SLCC, he gained the confidence to further pursue his education. Scott is on track to an exciting future he never thought possible a few short months ago. With a variety of opportunities from short-term programs, certificates, to associate degrees Scott found the right fit for him.
