On a busy October Saturday, more than a hundred child care providers from across the state of Utah gathered at the Karen Gail Miller Conference Center to attend the “Building a Sustainable Business” Child Care Summit. Traveling from as far as Price, Hyde Park and Hurricane to attend, participants were provided with opportunities to learn from each other in addition to hearing from a variety of guest speakers.
The participants were invited to attend three out of the five available breakout sessions, which covered topics ranging from communication to classroom management techniques. One provider from Lehi stated she wished she had the opportunity to visit more sessions.
"Basically, I am glad I went. I now have resources that will help my assistant as she is now learning the business." – provider, Pleasant Grove
While enjoying lunch, the providers listened to Simon Bolivar, Director of the Office of Child Care Licensing for the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, give a talk about the future of child care in Utah. The ability for working parents to have safe and affordable access to child care is a hot topic in our state. Bolivar recognizes the value of events like the Summit and available training to continue to develop because “what you do will influence a child for their entire life.”
The training referred to is the Child Care Business Fundamentals taught by Salt Lake Community College’s Corporate Training program. There are multiple sessions still available for home-based and center-based providers to attend through Summer 2023. Each 8-week online session covers business fundamentals ranging from marketing and budgeting to writing a business plan and more. If you are interested in attending this training, register here.
It was an honor to host such an interesting group of providers who all had such diverse backgrounds and stories. The charts below represent the diversity of those who attended and the reach this training provides. We look forward to continuing to provide training to help these providers thrive.
