Congratulations to our newest L ineworker Pre-Apprentice graduates! This year's part-time group completed their year-long studies to accomplish their goal of becoming lineworkers while balancing work, family, and school. This diverse group included a legacy, an electrician, a stay-at-home dad, and a public works employee. Good luck out there, and we hope to see you back as apprentices next year! If you are interested in becoming a lineworker the Spring cohort is now accepting applications and great news their is funding available! College can be an overwhelming thought for many people. “Am I too old to start college?” “College is not for me.” “How will this help me get a job?”  These are some of the most common concerns we hear about starting school. Our mission at Workforce & Economic Development is to provide short-term training to help with career development and give you a taste of college. Scott Smith Meet Scott, who was introduced to the idea of taking a class with Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) through the Department of Workforce Services (DWS). Scott had never been too keen on the idea of sitting in an office or a classroom. Given Scott’s preference for working with his hands, his DWS counselor recommended the Utah Works program. This program offers an opportunity to explore in-demand skills for Utah’s workforce needs, at no cost to the student.  Scott started with the 3-day Intro to Composites program , where he learned the basics of composites such as fabrication skills and techniques,...

“I just want you to know that I appreciate you empowering my kids today.” These are the words of a proud father as he watched his young son enthusiastically put together his own carbon fiber toolbox using power tools. Salt Lake Community College’s booth was full of exuberant and busy children (and adults!) at the 2022 Craft Lake City’s DIY Festival.  A smiling, young boy holding his DIY toolbox above his head. The event was held Friday through Sunday at the Utah State Fairpark fairgrounds just a short drive away from our Salt Lake Community College’s (SLCC) Westpointe Campus . A short burst of rainfall didn’t slow down the crowds of people coming to check out the local artisans, food, and live music.  SLCC’s Workforce & Economic Development booth was inside the Google Fiber STEM Building alongside other exciting exhibitors including the Aggie Drone Academy and the Clark Planetarium. After three years of hands-on training, education in the classroom, and working part-time the first apprenticeship class of Stadler Rail graduated. Starting their junior year of high school, these students completed high school, worked part-time and earned their associate's degree. Great job!!
